Do’s and Don’ts before and after a Hair Transplant

Do’s and Don’ts before and after a Hair Transplant

14 Mar, 2022

Before and after a Hair Transplant. So now that you decided to undertake a hair transplant, it’s important to take some precautions to ensure maximum survivability of transplanted hair, and therefore best possible results.

DO: Take Care to Keep Your Scalp Clean and Dry After a Hair Transplant

Keep your hair clean from hair gel and other products for at least one-month post-procedure. After 3 days of surgery, gently clean the implanted area by using your fingertips to avoid any damage to the follicle. Do not place your head directly under the showerhead. Wash your hair very gently for the first few days so that the healing process is not interrupted.

DO: Follow Your Hair Loss Expert’s Advice

Our hair transplant surgeons are specialists with many years of experience, and are trained not only how to perform the transplant but also how to take care of it. Strictly follow their advice to prevent any chances of infection and to ensure that your grafts heal as they should. Especially important is the antibiotic dose during the initial few days post-surgery.
Here at Evolved Clinics in Perth, we have a seasoned team of hair loss experts for your well-being. Simply get in touch to book a consultation with us.

DON’T: Be in direct Sunlight

Exposing your treated area to sunlight could damage the newly implanted follicles giving you a lesser success rate, and also compromise the healing process. In addition, sweating could increase the risk of an infection developing on your scalp. Therefore, you must avoid the beach, sauna, or pool for at least 30 days. Protecting your scalp, in particular, will provide you with a transplant result of natural and healthy-looking hair.

DON´T: Sleep with your Head touching the bed/ pillow

During the first 3 nights after hair transplant, you must sleep face forward towards the ceiling with your back facing the bed. Awkward as it may sound, this is an important precaution to take to reduce the possibility of excess swelling in your scalp as the anesthesia and saline solution starts to come down from the head and dissipate. It will also help to prevent any hair growth disruption by avoiding contact with grafts with your pillow/ bed. It is highly recommended that you use some sort of a donut type of pillow (similar to the one used for traveling on airplanes) for such a period.

DON’T: Smoke before and after Your Hair Transplant

Smoking before and after your treatment can interrupt the blood flow to the follicles and greatly impact how you heal. Blood flow is what promotes the growth of new hair, and by smoking, it can decelerate the healing process. Smoking should be avoided for 14 days after a hair transplant procedure as it could risk your follicle viability success rate by as much as 30%.

DON’T: Exercise Strenuously

You should avoid strenuous activities such as heavy weight lifting or long cardio workouts for 30 days post-surgery. That said, you may do light cardio such as brisk walking, light jog, or a stationary bike, etc. after 15 days from surgery.

This is not the complete list. Once you have booked surgery with us, you will be provided a detailed handbook of Do’s and Don’ts with specific instructions.
