Graft Preservation

Between extraction and implantation, we store follicles in a growth solution at a controlled temperature to maximize graft survival. Advanced tissue preservation techniques, including chilled graft trays, ATP, Growth Factor Therapy, and Hypothermasol, create an environment that mimics the body's natural state.

Frequently Asked Questions

Still have a doubt? Feel free to call us! We are always there to help you out.

What immediate care is required after hair transplant at Evolved Hair Restoration Clinic?

Immediately following your hair transplant, your scalp will be sensitive and require gentle care. It’s normal to experience mild swelling, redness or scabbing around the transplanted area and donor site. These are natural signs of the healing process. You should avoid touching, scratching or picking at the grafts, as this can dislodge follicles and affect results. Our team provides detailed post-operative instructions, including how to clean the scalp, apply prescribed ointments or sprays and manage any discomfort. Over-the-counter pain medications may be recommended for mild soreness. Following these instructions closely is essential to protect graft survival, reduce the risk of infection and ensure a smooth recovery. Patients are also advised to sleep with their head elevated for the first several nights to minimise swelling. Regular follow-ups allow our team to monitor healing and address any concerns promptly.

Will the transplanted hair remain permanent?

Yes. Transplanted hair is taken from permanent donor areas (usually the back and sides of the scalp) and is resistant to DHT, the hormone responsible for male-pattern baldness. When surgery is performed correctly, transplanted hair is generally permanent.

However, continued hair care, scalp hygiene and regular check-ups are important for long-term success. Non-transplanted hair may continue to thin naturally, so maintenance treatments or medications may be recommended to preserve overall density. At Evolved Hair Restoration Clinic, we provide customised guidance to ensure that your transplanted hair remains healthy, natural-looking and long-lasting.

When can I wash my hair after surgery?

Hair washing should be approached cautiously in the first days after a transplant. Most patients are advised to wait 3 days before gently washing the hair with a mild, unscented shampoo. This process helps remove dried blood or crusting without disturbing newly implanted grafts. Washing should be done with light, gentle motions and lukewarm water, avoiding direct pressure on the transplanted area. Our team provides step-by-step instructions and may demonstrate the proper technique to ensure safety and optimise graft survival. Maintaining scalp hygiene while protecting grafts is key to preventing infection and promoting healthy growth.

When will the new hair start to grow?

Transplanted hairs usually follow a predictable growth cycle. In the first few weeks, many of the newly implanted hairs may shed — a normal process known as “shock loss.” New growth typically begins around 3–4 months post-surgery. Initially, the hairs may appear thin and fine, gradually thickening over the next several months. Most patients notice significant improvement by 6 months, with full density and natural appearance achieved between 9–12 months. Individual growth rates vary depending on age, hair type and adherence to aftercare instructions. Patience is crucial, as hair maturation is a gradual process and following the clinic’s guidance will help maximise long-term results.

Is it normal to lose some transplanted hair after surgery?

Yes, temporary shedding of transplanted hair is a normal and expected part of the healing process. Known as “shock loss,” this occurs when the hair shaft falls out while the follicle remains intact beneath the scalp. It is a temporary stage and new hairs begin growing from these follicles within a few months. Understanding this helps manage expectations and reduces unnecessary worry. Proper post-operative care, including avoiding trauma to the grafts and following our instructions, supports the healthy regrowth of these follicles, ensuring that the final results are both permanent and natural-looking.

What about sleeping — any special precautions?

During the first few days after surgery, it’s recommended to sleep on your back or with your head slightly elevated. This reduces pressure on the newly implanted grafts and helps minimise swelling around the forehead and scalp. Using a soft pillow or multiple cushions can provide additional comfort. Avoid sleeping on your stomach or sides until your surgeon confirms it is safe to do so. Proper sleeping posture during this period is crucial for protecting the grafts, promoting healing and ensuring that hair growth occurs in the intended direction.

What are the possible complications I should watch for?

Although hair transplants are generally safe, it’s important to monitor for any signs of complications. Rarely, patients may experience infection, persistent swelling, numbness, excessive redness or delayed graft healing. In some cases, grafts may fail to take, though this is uncommon when performed by an surgeon. Contact Evolved Hair Restoration Clinic immediately if you notice symptoms such as pus, fever, severe pain or prolonged swelling. Early intervention can prevent complications from becoming serious and our team is always available to address concerns during your recovery.

Can I cut or style my hair soon after transplant?

It is recommended to avoid haircuts, tight hats or hairstyles that pull on the scalp until your surgeon confirms it is safe — usually after a few weeks. The transplanted follicles need time to secure themselves in the recipient area. Using hair products like gels or sprays should also be avoided initially, as these may irritate the scalp or affect healing. Once your surgeon approves, you can gradually resume styling and haircuts, taking care to handle the hair gently to preserve the integrity of the transplanted follicles.

How long until I see final results?

Hair growth is a gradual process. While some early regrowth may appear by 3–4 months, most patients see substantial improvement between 6–12 months. Full density, texture and natural blending with existing hair can take up to 12–18 months, depending on individual growth rates and adherence to post-operative care. Patience is key and following all aftercare instructions will maximise the long-term quality and appearance of your transplanted hair.

Do I need to stop certain medications before the Hair Transplant?

Yes. Some medications can increase bleeding during surgery or interfere with healing, which is why we recommend discussing all your regular medications with our medical team ahead of time. Blood-thinning medications, such as aspirin, warfarin, ibuprofen and certain anti-inflammatory drugs, are the most common products that need to be temporarily paused (only with the approval of your prescribing doctor). These medications affect clotting and can lead to unnecessary bleeding during graft extraction or placement.

Additionally, some herbal supplements — including ginseng, ginkgo biloba, fish-oil capsules and high-dose vitamin E — can have a mild blood-thinning effect and should be mentioned during your pre-operative assessment. At Evolved Hair Restoration Clinic, our team will provide clear written pre-surgery instructions so you can prepare safely and confidently.

What is the typical age range for a Male Hair Transplant?

There is no strict age requirement for a hair transplant, but results tend to be most predictable when hair loss has stabilised. Younger men who are still experiencing rapid thinning may not be ideal candidates, as transplanting too early can create unnatural long-term patterns if native hair continues to recede.

Most patients fall within the 25–55 age range, but suitability depends more on hair-loss pattern and stability rather than age alone. At Evolved Hair Restoration Clinic, we take a long-term view of your hair restoration — evaluating donor supply, future thinning risks and your aesthetic goals — to ensure the procedure will look natural for decades.

How many grafts will need for a Male Hair Transplant?

Yes, a detailed consultation is mandatory before any surgical procedure. At Evolved Hair Restoration Clinic, our surgeons evaluate your donor area, scalp condition, hair density and growth patterns. We also discuss your expectations and goals, helping you understand realistic outcomes. The consultation includes reviewing your medical history, assessing hair loss progression and deciding which technique—such as modified FUE or others—is most appropriate. This ensures your treatment plan is fully customised and safe.

What about costs and expected number of grafts?

The cost of a hair transplant is determined primarily by the number of grafts required, which depends on the extent of hair loss and donor area availability. During your consultation, our team provides a transparent, itemised cost estimate. We carefully assess your scalp to determine how many grafts are necessary for natural density and coverage. This personalised approach ensures there are no surprises and allows you to plan both financially and logistically for the procedure.

Will there be a consultation to assess my suitability before surgery?

Yes, a detailed consultation is mandatory before any surgical procedure. At Evolved Hair Restoration Clinic, our surgeons evaluate your donor area, scalp condition, hair density and growth patterns. We also discuss your expectations and goals, helping you understand realistic outcomes. The consultation includes reviewing your medical history, assessing hair loss progression and deciding which technique—such as modified FUE or others—is most appropriate. This ensures your treatment plan is fully customised and safe.

Will the Male Hair Transplant last forever?

Most transplanted hair is considered permanent when taken from the “safe donor zone” — an area resistant to the hormone DHT, which causes male-pattern hair loss. When transplantation is performed correctly, these hairs retain their resistance even when relocated to thinning areas.

However, it’s important to understand that a hair transplant does not stop future thinning in non-transplanted areas. You may still experience natural hair loss over time, depending on genetics and lifestyle factors. Many patients choose maintenance strategies such as medications, PRP or lifestyle adjustments to protect their remaining native hair.

Can I postpone or cancel if I’m not ready on surgery day?

Absolutely. Patient comfort and readiness are critical for a successful outcome. If you feel unprepared or anxious on the day of surgery, you can discuss postponement with our team. At Evolved Hair Restoration Clinic, we prioritise safety and patient satisfaction and will never pressure you into proceeding. We will reschedule the procedure at a time when you feel confident and ready.

What happens on the day of surgery at Evolved Hair Restoration Clinic?

On the day of your hair transplant, our team begins by thoroughly cleaning and sanitising your scalp to maintain a sterile environment. The surgeon then maps out the donor and recipient areas, carefully marking the hairline and zones where grafts will be implanted. This planning ensures that your new hairline looks natural and complements your facial features. Local anaesthesia is administered to the donor and recipient areas to ensure you remain completely comfortable and pain-free while awake throughout the procedure. Depending on the number of grafts and technique chosen, the surgery may last several hours. During the process, you can relax, watch TV, listen to music or simply rest. Our team frequently checks in with you to ensure you are comfortable and at ease. By the end of the day, all grafts are carefully implanted and post-operative instructions are provided to guide you through the recovery process.

How long does the surgery take?

The duration of a hair transplant procedure depends on multiple factors, including the number of grafts needed, the size of the area being treated and the technique used. Typically, a session lasts between 4 to 8 hours. Smaller sessions with fewer grafts may take less time, while larger sessions addressing extensive hair loss require longer periods. At Evolved Hair Restoration Clinic, we prioritise precision and care over speed, ensuring each follicle is carefully extracted and implanted to maximise survival and achieve natural-looking results. Breaks are scheduled during longer sessions to maintain comfort, hydration and safety. The team communicates throughout to ensure you remain relaxed and informed about the progress.

Will the Male Hair Transplant procedure be painful?

No. Male Hair Transplant procedures at Evolved Hair Restoration Clinic are performed under local anaesthesia, which numbs the scalp and ensures that you feel little to no pain during surgery. Most patients report only mild pressure or slight discomfort during graft extraction or placement. Any sensations experienced are temporary and generally well-tolerated.

For those who may feel anxious about the procedure, our team takes extra care to ensure comfort. We provide a calm, controlled environment, breaks if necessary and continuous monitoring to keep your experience as stress-free as possible. After surgery, mild soreness or tenderness in the donor and recipient areas is normal and can be managed with over-the-counter or prescribed medications. Proper post-operative care ensures quick recovery and minimal discomfort.

Who performs the transplant?

At Evolved Hair Restoration Clinic, a qualified and experienced surgeon performs all critical aspects of your transplant. While trained surgical assistants may assist with graft preparation, extraction and implantation under strict supervision, the surgeon is responsible for planning, mapping the hairline, determining graft placement and overseeing every step to ensure optimal outcomes. This ensures that you receive the highest standard of care and a natural, long-lasting result. You are encouraged to ask the surgeon about the procedure, the team and any concerns prior to starting.

How many grafts will be transplanted in a session?

The number of grafts transplanted depends on the extent of hair loss, the size of the recipient area and donor hair availability. During your consultation, our surgeons carefully assess your scalp to determine the most effective graft count for natural coverage and density. While small sessions may involve a few hundred grafts, larger areas may require 2,000–4,000 grafts or more, which can be completed in one or multiple sessions depending on your plan. A personalised graft count ensures optimal results and avoids over-harvesting the donor area.

Is the surgery safe and hygienic?

Yes, hair transplant surgery is considered safe when performed by a qualified team under sterile conditions. At Evolved Hair Restoration Clinic, we follow strict hygiene protocols, including sterilising all instruments, maintaining a clean surgical environment and monitoring patient health throughout the procedure. Complications are rare and most patients experience minimal discomfort and a smooth recovery. Patient safety and quality outcomes are our highest priorities and we take every precaution to ensure the procedure is safe, effective and reliable.

Dr. Seetal Dhaliwal is the Medical Director of Evolved Hair Restoration Australia, bringing together a strong medical background, surgical discipline, and a compassionate, patient-centred approach to modern hair restoration.

Before entering hair restoration, Dr. Dhaliwal worked across multiple Australian hospitals, gaining broad clinical experience in emergency medicine, obstetrics and gynaecology, psychiatry, and general surgery. Her surgical background developed her appreciation for precision, detail, anatomical understanding, and hands-on procedural work, while her wider medical experience shaped a calm and empathetic approach to patient care.

Dr. Dhaliwal’s journey into hair restoration medicine began in 2024, after pursuing a pathway in general surgery. She was drawn to hair transplantation because it combines medical science, surgical skill, and artistic judgement. For Dr. Dhaliwal, hair restoration is not simply about replacing lost hair. It is about restoring facial balance, rebuilding confidence, and creating results that look natural, age-appropriate, and personally suited to each patient. She undertook advanced training under Dr. Sambav Upadhyay (a Master Surgeon and International Medical Director at Evolved Hair Clinics), refining her skills in follicular unit extraction, graft handling, Direct Follicle implantation, hairline design, donor management, and the clinical principles required to achieve safe, natural-looking outcomes.

Dr Anita Cottee is a Hair Restoration Surgeon at Evolved Hair Restoration, where she specialises exclusively in modern follicular unit extraction (FUE) hair transplantation using the clinic’s proprietary Direct Follicle Insertion (DFI) technique.

Over the past several years, Dr Cottee has spent thousands of hours in hair restoration surgery, participating in every aspect of the surgical journey—from patient assessment and surgical planning through to follicular extraction, recipient site creation, graft placement and long-term postoperative care. This concentrated surgical experience has provided her with a deep understanding of both the technical and artistic principles required to deliver exceptional results.

Dr Cottee has developed a particular interest in:

  • Hairline refinement and facial framing
  • Frontal and temporal restoration
  • Scar camouflage
  • Corrective hair transplant procedures
  • Long-term donor management and protection

Her approach combines meticulous surgical technique with careful long-term planning, ensuring each procedure not only restores hair but also preserves future treatment options. Every surgical plan is tailored to the individual patient’s pattern of hair loss, donor characteristics and lifetime goals.

Working within Evolved Hair Restoration’s evidence-based protocols, Dr Cottee incorporates advanced imaging, Trichological assessment and donor preservation principles into every procedure. She is committed to continual professional development and contributes to the clinic’s culture of research, innovation and ongoing surgical refinement.

Dr Cottee believes that successful hair restoration is measured not simply by graft numbers, but by creating results that remain natural, age appropriately and enhance a patient’s confidence for years to come.

Paul Green is an internationally recognised trichologist, researcher and hair restoration innovator with more than 30 years of experience in the diagnosis, treatment and surgical management of hair loss. Born and trained in New Zealand, he relocated to Australia in 1998 and has since built a career combining Trichology, regenerative medicine, surgical hair restoration and clinical research.

A defining feature of Paul’s work has been his ability to identify limitations in conventional approaches and develop more precise ways to assess and treat hair loss. His innovations include advancing the classification and clinical understanding of female-pattern hair loss, helping practitioners more accurately recognise its varied presentations, monitor progression and develop treatment plans suited to the individual patient.

Paul is also the developer of the Partial Transection Technique, an innovative approach investigating the regenerative potential of partially transected hair follicles. His peer-reviewed research on the technique was published in 2024, contributing new evidence to the continuing scientific discussion around follicular regeneration, donor-area preservation and the future possibilities of hair restoration surgery.

His latest research explores the relationship between biological ageing and androgenetic alopecia. Rather than viewing androgenetic alopecia solely through the traditional lens of genetics and androgen sensitivity, this work considers how age-related cellular changes may influence follicular miniaturisation, reduced regenerative capacity and the progressive nature of pattern hair loss. The research may help establish a broader framework for understanding why androgenetic alopecia advances over time and how future treatments could target both hormonal and ageing-related mechanisms.

Throughout his career, Paul has collaborated with leading clinicians and organisations across the international hair restoration sector. As a former Head of the International Training Academy at DHI International. His work focused on integrating technical precision, aesthetic planning, donor management and patient-centred care.

In 2021, Paul co-founded Evolved Hair Restoration in Perth. Through Evolved Hair Restoration and the International Institute of Hair Restoration, he continues to develop advanced clinical protocols, train doctors and surgical teams, and investigate new approaches to hair-loss assessment, follicular preservation and long-term outcome measurement.

Paul is also leading the development of next-generation clinical intelligence and auditing systems designed specifically for hair restoration. These systems aim to connect consultation findings, pathology, treatment decisions, surgical data and long-term outcomes—allowing clinics to learn from every patient journey and continually improve clinical standards.

Paul’s career reflects a sustained commitment to challenging established assumptions and advancing hair restoration through research, innovation, education and measurable patient outcomes. His work continues to bridge the gap between Trichology and surgical medicine, with the goal of creating more personalised, scientifically informed and accountable care for people experiencing hair loss.
