Q&A on Finasteride

Q&A on Finasteride

27 Sep, 2022

Finasteride is one of the only two FDA-approved treatments clinically proven to combat male pattern baldness—but it doesn’t work its magic overnight.

When does Finasteride produce results?

Finasteride stops hair loss by blocking DHT. DHT (a.k.a Dihydrotestosterone) plays a pivotal role in Male Pattern Baldness. It’s a hormone that attaches itself to men’s hair follicles thus damaging them and ultimately rendering them unable to grow new hair. Finasteride prevents hair loss by stopping your body from converting testosterone into DHT.

What is optimal dose of Finasteride?

Most doctors will go with a recommended dose of 1 mg per day in general. But even if you cut the tablet in half, its effects are pretty much the same as 0.6-0.7mg of tablet is considered sufficient from an efficacy standpoint. Lower than 0.5mg is not recommended. Therefore, in terms of dosing, it could be anywhere between be 0.5 – 1mg.

At Evolved Clinics in Perth, Australia we generally start with Finasteride 1mg for three times a week. We have seen this to be in the sweet spot. Will it work for everyone? Short answer is No. But by giving this dose as a starting point, we will decide how we progress thereon and finally arrive at the dose which can be kept sustainable on a long-term basis.

How often should Finasteride be administered?

Finasteride stays in the hair for at least a month. We believe a patient does not need to consume it every day. Our recommended dose is 1mg three times a week. Most people tolerate to this level of dosing with minimal side effects. This way it is also more convenient for patients in terms of a regimen as well.

Can you use both Minoxidil and Finasteride in terms of a dosing schedule?

Yes, the combination has better outcomes than taking it individually. It is also not that expensive to consume this combination.

Because Finasteride and minoxidil work using different mechanisms, there is no risk in using both at same time. In fact, taking them in tandem could be the most effective means of managing hair loss. A 2015 randomized and comparative study of the combined treatment of Male Pattern Baldness with Finasteride and Minoxidil found that “the combined medication showed best efficacy.

Is every alternate day a good schedule to consume Finasteride?

Yes

Do you need a blood test before Finasteride is administered?

No

Can Finasteride regrow hair?

Sometimes. It depends on the existing level of miniaturization (diameter) of hair follicles. If the miniaturization is more than 50%, there are chances it can regrow hair

Is Finasteride safe in pregnancy?

No, if you are conceiving. If you are planning to conceive, we recommend you to stop medicine a couple of months before as Finasteride is a long-acting medicine. On the other hand, if your wife is pregnant, you can consume Finasteride without any issues.
