When can you cut hair after an FUE Hair Transplant?

When can you cut hair after an FUE Hair Transplant?

21 Dec, 2022

When you get your hair back after the hair transplant, you can go back to your barber to follow your old haircut routine. In fact, what we have seen is that patients can’t wait to get their haircut after hair transplant to design a hairstyle they’ve always wanted but could not show off. So, one of the most common questions about hair transplant procedures is: “When can you get a haircut after a FUE hair transplant?”

Following must be kept in mind –

1. After-care protocols must be diligently followed

Being extra cautious and following aftercare protocols post a hair transplant surgery is super important if you wish to achieve the best hair transplant results. For example, post hair transplant surgery and before a haircut, even washing your hair must be done with care. Your scalp requires special attention due to the time required for grafts to fully settle and seal themselves with the skin. This usually takes around ten days. By this time, other symptoms such as scabbing, scarring, and redness would have also disappeared.

2. Timing of haircut is based on when the hair comes back after a transplant

After a while, you will see that the hair you had before the hair transplant will start growing, and the rate of growth for normal hair will be faster than the rate of growth for FUE transplanted hair. If you don’t like the look of your hair because of the difference in this growth speed you can consider a haircut, but only for the donor area, not the transplanted hair. In either case, it is advisable to wait at least three weeks before getting a haircut and should be discussed with your hair transplant surgeon.

After the second month post surgery, your transplanted hair will begin to grow, but it will be much thinner than the rest of your hair. They will also fall for the last time in a very short time. This condition is known as Shock Loss, and just like baby teeth, the new hair will fall and regrow with greater density and thickness. This new hair will be resistant to all types of hair loss and therefore is permanent.

3. What kind of first haircut is advisable?

Post recovery from the shock loss phase, you may get your first haircut, but only use scissors for a while. As previously stated, the transplanted grafts are extremely delicate initially. Even after the new hair is sealed and secured, getting a haircut with a shaving machine may harm the transplanted hair because it does not work like scissors. Scissors can cut hair from a certain distance away, whereas a shaving machine must be close to the skin.

If you want to use a shaving machine for your haircut after a hair transplant, you should wait at least 6 months post surgery for a completely risk-free haircut.

We understand how badly you want to get a haircut after a hair transplant but following these protocols, and consulting with your hair transplant surgeon, is most important.
